The age of the house sets the starting point, and in Aurora that age can be anything.
Postwar ranches in the north
Hoffman Heights went up as mostly three-bedroom homes in three models. Kitchens from that era are compact, and many have been redone once already, often with cabinets now worn out themselves. In these houses we look at layout before style. A better sink and range position does more than nicer doors.
Builder kitchens in the southeast
Neighborhoods such as Saddle Rock, Tallyn's Reach and Southshore mostly came with builder cabinet packages. The usual complaints: short uppers with dead space above, fillers in odd places, a pantry too shallow to be useful. You don't always need to start over. Taller uppers, a pantry wall or an island rebuilt with drawers can fix most of it.
55-and-over condos
Heather Gardens, an age-restricted condominium community built from 1973 to 1986, is its own kind of job: association rules, shared walls and owners who want things within easy reach. Drawers over doors and lower shelf heights matter more there than style.
