Custom cabinets in Thornton, from 1950s ranches to north-side builds.

Cabinets911 designs, supplies and installs custom cabinets in Thornton, and the city hands us two very different starting points. In Original Thornton, near 88th Avenue, the brick ranches date to the 1950s. North of 120th Avenue, many houses are recent builds whose cabinets came straight from a production builder's package.

Thornton started as a planned town. In 1953, developer Sam Hoffman began building modest brick homes north of Denver, with land reserved for schools, churches and shopping, and residents voted to incorporate in 1956. That first neighborhood is still largely intact. Its kitchens are small, and a good cabinet plan treats every inch as spoken for. The north side asks the opposite question. The space is there. The cabinets just aren't good enough yet.

Kitchen cabinets for Original Thornton's brick ranches

A 1950s tract ranch was built for a young family with a short list of appliances. The kitchen is often a galley or a small L with a window over the sink and a doorway at each end. Two doorways mean two traffic lanes through the work area, and less wall for cabinets than the room size suggests.

We plan these kitchens like a boat galley. Every base cabinet gets drawers. Corners get a lazy Susan or get closed off honestly with a filler, instead of hiding a black hole. If one doorway can be closed, that wall becomes the pantry. Kitchen cabinetry for a house this size is mostly about subtraction: deciding what stops living on the counter.

Fastening to exterior walls

Upper cabinets on an outside wall of a brick house need solid fastening. We locate the framing and confirm what's behind the drywall before drilling. A plastic anchor doesn't belong under a cabinet full of plates.

If the original cabinets are still there

Some 1950s houses still have site-built cabinets. Look before you tear them out: some are solid wood and worth reusing in a garage or laundry room. The sink base is the part most likely to be gone.

North-side builder kitchens: what to upgrade first

Much of Thornton's growth has pushed north, past 120th Avenue toward Trailside and Heritage Todd Creek. Eastlake, one of the city's older north-side neighborhoods, now has new townhomes and condos around the Eastlake/124th commuter rail station, which opened on the N Line in 2020. Production builders install a cabinet package chosen to hit a price. The boxes are usually particleboard, sizes come from a short catalog, and uppers often stop well below the ceiling.

That's no reason to rip it all out. In a newer house, add before you replace. Full cabinet replacement makes sense when the layout itself fights you, not when the doors are merely plain. Here's the order we'd suggest:

  • Protect the sink base with a leak tray before it ever gets wet
  • Swap worn hinges and slides for soft-close hardware where the boxes accept it
  • Add a pantry wall or extend the uppers toward the ceiling
  • Add or rebuild the island with real drawer storage
  • Replace the full run only if the layout is the problem

Northglenn: the planned suburb next door

Northglenn began in 1959 as a Perl-Mack subdivision in unincorporated Adams County. The first show homes opened near what is now I-25 and 104th Avenue, the plan included schools, parks and a shopping center, and residents incorporated as a city in 1969. Like Original Thornton, it was built quickly and in volume, so many houses share floor plans and the same small-kitchen constraints.

In houses from that era, the hall bath is often the cheapest visible upgrade. Older vanities tend to sit lower than people now find comfortable, and many are a door and a single shelf around the trap. A taller vanity with drawers notched around the plumbing changes the room. Our bathroom vanities are planned around the drain position you already have.

Where a Thornton project should start

  1. 01

IfYou own an original 1950s ranch

ThenTest for asbestos and lead before demo, then plan drawers and pantry space first.

  2. 02

IfYour north-side builder kitchen works but looks tired

ThenUpgrade hardware, add storage up high, and keep the boxes.

  3. 03

    IfYour sink base is swollen

ThenReplace that cabinet and find the leak. A new door won't fix a soft floor.

  4. 04

IfYou want an island in a newer home

ThenCheck aisle clearances on all sides before falling for a size.

Thornton and Northglenn areas we cover

Thornton runs a long way north to south, from Original Thornton near 88th Avenue up past 120th Avenue toward E-470, with Northglenn next door along I-25. A north-side appointment and a south-side one can be a real drive apart, so we batch site visits by part of town.

Thornton cabinet questions

CallerAre the original cabinets in a 1950s Thornton ranch worth keeping?

Cabinets911

Sometimes, in part. Solid wood site-built boxes can be refinished or reused in a garage, but the layout rarely suits a modern kitchen and the sink base is often water-damaged. We check each run and tell you plainly which pieces are worth saving and which are just old.

CallerCan soft-close be added to my existing builder cabinets?

Cabinets911

Usually, depending on the hinge. Many cabinets accept clip-on soft-close adapters or replacement hinges in the same bore. Drawers need new slides, and older drawer boxes sometimes need rebuilding to fit them. On particleboard boxes where screw holes have already stripped, the options narrow.

CallerShould I upgrade cabinets now or wait until my builder warranty ends?

Cabinets911

Read the warranty first. Some cover workmanship on items the builder installed, and changes to plumbing or cabinets can affect what's covered. Adding a pantry wall or extending uppers rarely touches those items. Replacing the sink base or moving plumbing might. When in doubt, ask the builder in writing before work starts.

CallerDo you work in Northglenn too?

Cabinets911

Yes. Northglenn's older ranches have a lot in common with Original Thornton's, and we plan them the same way. Our project process is the same in both: measure, design, then build or supply and install. If you're just west of the line, Westminster is covered as well.
