The 12th Street Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and a cottage at 717 12th Street, built in 1859, is counted as the oldest building in Golden. The East Street district and the old 8th and 9th Street neighborhood add their own mix of merchant homes and worker houses. Different eras. Same headache for an installer: nothing is plumb, nothing is level, and the walls aren't flat.
Scribing to walls that wander
A cabinet box is a rectangle. A wall that has stood since the 1800s isn't. We order end panels and fillers oversize, hold them to the wall, trace its profile and cut to the line, so the cabinet meets the plaster without a dark gap hidden behind caulk. On a sloped floor we level the boxes to the high point and scribe the toe kick down. Inset doors suit a Victorian kitchen, but they expose every sixteenth of an inch of racking, so we only recommend inset when the boxes can be set dead square.
Exterior changes go through the city
Golden's preservation review is about the outside of the house. The city says most exterior alterations within its established historic districts, or to a locally designated site, need a Certificate of Appropriateness review. New cabinets won't trigger that. A new window over the sink, or a range hood vented through an outside wall, might. Talk to the city's planning staff before the kitchen design depends on either.
